Hand Embroidery Designs

For many, embroidery is still something they prefer to do by hand and there is nothing that compares to relaxing in the evening with an embroidery hoop and carefully working with the colorful threads “up close and personal.” For these people, embroidery designs will often be found today in kits that include all of the materials you need for a wall hanging, from the appropriate cloth to all of the threads in the appropriate colors. At www.berlinembroidery.com you can kits that are of a higher caliber than those found in most craft stores in their “Needle Painting Kits.” The field mouse rendition sells for $40.00 Canadian (remember to do the conversion, folks!), but includes free advice and support if you have questions. The owner of the site is an embroidery designs artist and many of the patterns are originals.

At www.heritagesewing.com there are a few dozen free embroidery designs for hand sewing that are particularly nice. This is a smaller site and they sell their own custom designed patterns, so if you can, purchase a pattern or two at some point as well. Www.vsccs.com has quite a few hand cross-stitch embroidery designs, mostly of the traditional floral type, angels and the like.

If you are interested in learning embroidery for the first time but don’t have anyone to teach you (or are afraid you don’t have the patience, visit www.magicembroidery.com. This new method based out of South Africa offers a basic course on a 3-hour video that will teach you many of the basic stitches, including blanket, bullion rose, fern, chain, herringbone and many others. Also included is material, threads and all supplies to make a completed sampler in a floral pattern that is quite lovely. The total price for the beginner’s kit is 258.00 South African Rand, including international shipping, which translates to approximately $39.00 US – not at all bad for the kit, instructions, supplies and instructional video. The embroidery designs here have a distinctly modern edge to traditional designs.

What embroidery designs are favorites?

Embroidery designs are a matter of personal preference, but the perennial favorites over the last twenty years have been:

  • Monograms. These can be simple and classic, or elaborate embroidery designs based on old English texts with animals and plants incorporated.

  • Floral motifs show up on everything from seat cushions in dining rooms to shirts and dresses.

  • Anything patriotic is always popular.

  • Holiday themes, such as Christmas trees, menorrahs, snowmen, turkeys and the like (unless you’re a turkey…)

  • Animals. Pets are always a huge hit at embroidery design shops!

You, of course, are limited only by your imagination and your talent with a needle. So get busy and create your own embroidery designs if you like. Perhaps it will be tomorrow’s favorite…
